A little Southwest Louisiana Rose Society History:
Southwest LA Rose Society in Lake Charles began in 1960 as a “men only” club. Eventually women joined in on the gardening fun and the society grew to a large number of members.
We are an active society and offer a variety of rose related activities such as:
- Interesting Program topics at monthly meetings
- Providing speakers for local garden clubs
- Hosting a booth at the Annual SWLA Garden Expo
- Hands-on rose pruning demonstration in February at First Federal Bank - Lakeshore Dr.
- Providing Growing Roses in SWLA brochures to Greengate and Prien Pines nurseries
Rose Shows and Rose Arranging Workshops have been the major activities for SWLA Rose Society members. We offer an arrangement workshop the first weekend in October and sponsor a rose show every year in the fall. For several years the rose show has featured Sam Houston High School student Rose Art Work, show attendees vote on their favorites.
The Rosette, our monthly newsletter edited by Julie Engert, provides the latest in good rose growing practices and current information to help all members learn the joy of growing roses right here in southwest Louisiana.
Like The Rosette, our Consulting Rosarians help members with rose culture and questions.
The newsletter is undergoing a bit of transition; new name is The Rose Gardener!
